Big Write 27.6.14

This week our Big write will be to write a recount of our trip to Kirkstall Abbey.  We have practised writing recounts and we have found out that they have a clear structure.  These are our success steps for recounts.

I can write in the first person –
me, I, she, you, her, him.

I can write about events in the
order that they happened.

I can use time openers to start my
sentences and order what happened.

I can write a title and an introduction that tells
the reader who, when, where.

These are examples of time openers - First, next, then, after that, in the end and finally.

Talking over the children's trip and asking questions like;
What did you do first?
After that tell me what you did?
What was the last thing that you did?
will really help the children's recall of events.

How old is a toy?

We have been looking at the age of toys by thinking about the materials that they are made of. We then ordered the toys on a timeline. These skills will come in useful when we visit Abbey House Museum and take part in our toys workshop.

Making toys

As part of our science topic on forces we have been making boats and working out how to move the boats using push and pull forces. Have a look at our super boats.

Bean planting

Everyone in the class got the opportunity to plant a bean seed last term and to keep a diary of how the bean grows. This term we brought the plants and diaries back into school to plant in the school gardens. Have a look at how much fun we had in the school gardens.

I hope that the slugs and snails don't have too much of a feast!!

Art in the style of David Hockney

We have been looking at the art of local artist David Hocknrey.  We visited Skelton woods and took pictures ourselves of the woods.  We then used these images to make pictures using a collage technique. The end result are fantastic and I hope you enjoyed them when they came home.  We also looked at a painting called Garrowby Hill by David Hockney.  This painting is a landscape picture of North Yorkshire where Hockney used bold colours and defined lines to show the patchwork of hills. We painted the road and outline of the hills first and then used bright colours to show the patchwork of hills.  I was really pleased with everyone's careful work, they looked fantastic.
