Our visit to Leeds Parish Minster

What a fantastic morning we had at Leeds Minster.  The staff were so friendly and really helped us to learn more about the nativity and the features of a church.  I was so proud of everyone's behaviour, you all set such a great example for Fieldhead Carr school.

Take a look at our fantastic pictures.

Big Talk 29.11.13

This week your child’s talk homework is to think about 5 sentences that they could write about this picture.  The picture shows the witch in Hansel and Gretel.

Talking about this will help support their big talk session on  Friday.  Please think about wow words (adjectives) that the children can use in their sentences.

If possible could the TV be turned off while this discussion

is taking place.

Thanks for your support.

Golden Pupils

Harley

I am so proud of your new attitude to reading and writing.  I know you have been working hard at home practising your letter formation and phonic sounds because I can see your hard work paying off in your literacy work at school.  You are really trying hard to sound out to spell independently and your concentration has been excellent.  Superstar hard work Harley, well done.

Zoe

An all round golden girl who follows instructions the first time and works with super independence and concentration.  What a great example you set, thank you Zoe.

Identifying old and new light sources

We have been creating our own mini time lines using three pictures of light sources.  We had to label the time line, label it oldest and newest and then place the light sources on the time line.  These were the pictures we were using.

Can you remember what each light source is called and how you ordered them?

Orienteering with year 5

We had an invite form year 5 to share their orienteering course that they were completing.  Thank you year 5 we all had great fun.

Outdoor maths

Last week we looked at finding halves and quarters of shapes and everyday objects.  This week we moved on to look at finding half and doubles of given numbers.  We worked as teams outside.  Each team member had to show the answer on their whiteboards and then a nominated team member raced to the hoop to fetch back the answer.  Everyone looked like they were having loads of fun and were able to show some great maths.

Guess the object

Miss Two Shoes came into school this morning with a fascinating object.  We have tried to work out what it was.  Can you let me know what you think?????

testing our safety jackets

After learning about the Green Cross Code we designed our own jackets that would help to keep us safe when we are out in the dark by helping us to be easily seen.  After planning the jacket on paper we then made a small version of the jacket and tested it in either our light boxes or our dark den.  We identified two key findings;

1. The jacket was brighter if it was one main colour
2. Using reflective material like silver stripes or sparkly fabric helped to reflect the light from the
torch and made the jacket stand out more.

We may have some future fashion designers in class!!!

Big talk 22.11.13

This is our big talk picture for the 22.11.13

Look carefully at this picture;

Where does the road lead to?

How would you feel travelling along it?

How would you describe what you could see from the road?

Talking about this will help support children's big talk session on  Friday.

Elizabeth

Thank you Elizabeth for being so golden.  Your behaviour is always outstanding and I am so pleased to see that your hard work is paying off as your writing goes from strength to strength as you are using interesting vocab, sentence openers and punctuation more consistently.

Finlay

You are golden because you never fail to put in maximum effort in all that you do.  Your sounding out to spell is fantastic and you are able to work with increasing independence.  You are also setting a amazing example to everyone in our class with your outstanding carpet behaviour.

Road safety

This week in topic we have been thinking about how to keep safe in the dark.  We have been learning the green cross code, designing road safety posters and planning and making our own jackets to keep us safe in the dark.  We will be testing these jackets out next week so look out for the results.

In class we have been using this website to help us understand more about how to keep safe on the roads.  There are some great games to play.  Have fun and let me know what you learn.

Traditional stories

We have been looking at the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff in our literacy lessons.  First we acted out the story and together wrote a story mountain to understand what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story.  We have gone on to use wow words in our Troll wanted posters, write our own different endings to the story, write to the troll explaining why the goats should be allowed to cross and looked at a different version of the classic story called "Three Billy Goats Fluff". Linking in with our dark dark night topic we have also made shadow puppets and put on plays for our friends.  Next week we will be writing our own version of the story.  Phew what a lot of hard work.  Well done everyone.

Children in need day

Have a look at the book fun we had on our pyjama day for Pudsey.  It was fantastic to share our favourite books and to take the time to read them with our friends and cuddly animals.  We even went on to use one of the books in our ICT lesson later that day to help us to draw some amazing pictures of owls.

Light and dark

This half term out topic is "In the dark, dark wood".  This links directly with our science topic "Light and dark".  This week we have been conducting two investigations.  One looked at comparing different light sources and how they helped us to see in the dark and the other saw children predicting and testing which colour can be best seen in the dark.

Nieve

Well done Nieve your concentration has been fantastic this week enabling you to complete a super story mountain in guided reading independently.  It's great to see you focused, listening carefully and taking more care with your work.  Keep up your hard work.

Lacey

Wonderful independent writing this week Lacey you are really starting to use your phonics well to help you sound out to spell and your writing is always interesting to read.

The art of collage

As part of our new topic "In the dark, dark night" we have been making bonfire pictures and making versions of Plop the owl from the book we have read "The owl who was afraid of  the dark".  We have used collage to make our pictures and I think you will agree they look fantastic.

Finding out why we have Bonfire Night

We have all enjoyed bonfires and Fireworks this week so we found it interesting to learn why we have these celebrations.  We listened to the story of Guy Fawkes and then ordered the story using picture cards.  Lots of great learning well done.

This is a picture of a Victorian school room.
Can you think of sentences that use a wow word to describe what you can see?

Measuring madness

Today the class went measuring mad.  We used a dinosaur ruler to measure objects around the classroom accurately. Everyone seemed to be having great fun.  We also got a master class in measuring from Pete our caretaker who was putting up some picture frames in our classroom at the same time as our lesson.  We talked together about the importance of accurate measuring and we observed how Pete used a tape measure to get the pictures hanging straight.

Star writer

Holly was our star writer of the week with her fantastic independent writing.

Congratulations Holly.

Guide dogs for the blind visit

Last week Guide dogs for the Blind fund raiser, Thelma visited our class with her fabulous dogs Alma and Rhoda.  Thelma shared with us why guide dogs are needed and how they are trained at puppy school.  We then got the chance to meet the dogs up close and walk them.  We also tried on different glasses that helped us to experience a range of eye conditions and how they would affect people's eyesight including a complete blindfold that took away all of our eyesight.  Children shared that they felt worried , scared and nervous when their sight was taken away or decreased.  We could all see the benefit and importance of having a Guide dog.  Have a look at our pictures to see what we got up to.

Making natural dyes

This week in our topic lessons we have been making natural colour dyes.  We used different foods to create a dye using just water and salt.  The results were brilliant.  Keep an eye on the blog to see what we are going to do with the fabric strips.

Special visitors

This week we have enjoyed a special visit from a class mum and her new baby.  We were able to ask lost of questions about baby's routines and what happens when you visit a real baby clinic. We used this information in our science work when we looked at how we grow and develop over time.  Thank you so much to mum and baby we all loved meeting you both especially when Mrs Longhawn got a cuddle with baby! .

Can you punctuate the sentences???

Try this game to practice your reading and punctuation.

Investigating using our senses

We have been using our sense of taste, touch and hearing to investigate this week.  The taste group were very brave tasting 4 different foods,  They predicted what they would taste like and then tasted the food to see if the actual taste matched their prediction.  The children also completed a touch walk where they used their feet to experience and name different textures.  To test out their sense of hearing children played a listening game identifying familiar street sounds.  I hope you all had lots of fun.  In a few weeks time we will be using our senses to write poetry.

VCOP superheroes

This week we have met all the VCOP superheroes.

The children used the super hero masks to help them improve a sentence by using the super hero powers.  We also used the fizz books for the first time to play on the Roy the Zebra website that helps us punctuate sentences correctly.

Try out this addition game with an Egyptian theme and let me know how you get on.  Click on the mummy to start.

Super maths work

This week in maths we have been looking at adding and subtracting.  The group working with
Mrs Longhawn used counters to help us work out the number sentence.  We learnt that it was important to move the counters with our fingers as we count to make sure that we are accurate and don't count the same counter more than once or miss one out.  Some children were starting to use a number line to ass numbers within 30.  Excellent work everyone.

What is the best way to wash your hands???????

This week in science we have been conducting our first investigation.  We wanted to find out the best way to get rid of germs from our hands when we wash them.  We tested cold water, warm water no soap and warm water with soap.  The children all made a prediction with lots going for the soap option because "it would wash away the germs" and some children thinking that cold water would work best "because it would freeze the germs off."

Have a look at the pictures to see our "germ" covered hands and how we got on washing them.

Computer suite fun

On Friday we visited the computer suite for the first time.  Our learning target was to log on independently which most of us were able to manage.  This was fantastic for our first visit.  Once we logged on we explored the textease drawing package.  I am looking forward to our next visit, lets see who can remember how to log on.
